Bugis-Raffles Shopping
After lunch, the rest of the group headed over to Orchard/Somerset for shopping. I spoke with Emily earlier in the morning over MagicJack and she mentioned that she was looking for a certain old Casio watch that was cheaper in Singapore. Based on my memory of the first day, I knew we passed by several watch stores in Bugis Junction and Iluma. So I headed there to quickly retrace my steps from Day 1. There was no luck in either, so I went over to Raffles City and an underground mall called City Link. Out of all of those, I only found 2 places with a similar, but not exact model. It turned out to be a new model based on the classic Emily was looking for.
It started getting close to the end of the work day, so I had to get back to the hotel to call Wing and Laura. I headed back to the hotel and decided to make a quick stop to this hidden shopping area right across the street from Victoria Hotel. I found 2 places that had the watch. The US price is $40, so I was looking for something from $20-30 US. The first store I came across had it at $55 SG and only willing to go down to $50 ($39.53 US). The second place had it at $50 and after a lot of talking offered me $35 ($27.67). That was the true value because they let me walk away from it. I went back after a few minutes to get it.
Another achievement completed! Shopping normally bores me unless I have a goal.

Singapore Day 2
We woke up to heavy rains on the second day and were deciding what to do. The forecast for both today and tomorrow are scattered thunderstorms, so it probably didn't matter. If we didn't make an effort to head out, we'd be in Bugis for the entire trip! So today was the day we'd head for Sentosa. We were told by the locals that it's cheesy and not worth going to, but we decided to see it just to see it. We just weren't planning on spending the entire day there. We headed out about 11am. It was only drizzling at the time, so we made it over to Raffles St. without getting too wet. Then we got a cab to Vivo City for just $7.
Vivo City
Vivo City is a shopping area just outside of Sentosa and the last chance to get cheap food before entering the touristy island. Laura had recommended a bunch of things to get at the Vivo City food court and we knocked off quite a few of the items. Our lunch consisted of Hainanese chicken, pork sandwiches, fishball soup and sugar cane juice. This meal topped the first day's lunch as the best meal of the trip. It was raining hard after we ate, so we hung out in Vivo City for about another hour just browsing shops. The regular mall shops were very American along with the prices. So I didn't end up buying anything. There were tons of phone and tablet accessories, but nothing wildly exotic that I couldn't find online. There were many interesting food stands throughout the mall, but I was too full to get anything else.
Sentosa
After the rain died down, we took the boardwalk over to Sentosa. It was a scenic route that allowed me to take nice pictures along the way. Sentosa was just what we expected... pretty much a touristy amusement park, but still worth visiting for a few hours just to get some pictures and say we were there.
Marina Bay Sands
We left Sentosa around 4:30pm, checked back at the hotel and then headed off to Marina Bay Sands Hotel. The others had gone there the night before while I was with Wing. Apparently, you have to go on the $50 tour in order to go up to the famous roof deck. Even then, they don't allow you go go in the infinity pool unless you're a guest. We just stayed on the outside, which already provided some interesting camera shots.

Jiselle wanted to get a preview of shopping for tomorrow, so we headed to Orchard Street after MBS. We had dinner at another Food Republic, this time at the top floor of a Somerset mall. The food stands were similar, but we got a chance to try more different things. I went for Wing's recommendation on the oyster omelet. This is something available in NY, but tastes better in Singapore. After dinner, we checked out the shops in the same building. It was more of the same for me... lots of accessories, nothing that special... no interesting gift items. I made note of the SMRT stop in case we got lost. We then headed out. Jiselle went to H&M while the rest of us went to Courts, Singapore's famous electronics/appliance store. They had a great selection of computer equipment. The prices weren't that good though... about the same as US, but with the tax break. I just wasn't looking for anything, but got to try out the ASUS U36 laptop I always wanted (I didn't end up getting this because my office already provided me with a Macbook Pro).
So that was another complete day where we covered a lot of ground in a short period of time

Singapore Day 1
The Phone
After walking around, we returned to the hotel. I called Laura first, but the phone kept ringing and didn't go to voicemail. Then I dialed Wing's number and it gave me some kind of alert tone instead of a ring. Fortunately, Victoria Hotel had free call AND wi-fi. I was able to get Laura on Whatsapp and she gave me a different number. It turned out that I was getting the errors because I was dialing the country code, 65. After that, I was able to call both Laura and Wing. I even made plans with both on the same night!
Bugis Junction
Since it was already past noon, we didn't want to venture to one of the hawker centers for lunch. We just went over to Bugis Junction. I walked around first to see which stands were Singaporean because there were a lot of different Asian cuisines there. I narrowed it down to 3... a curry place, satay and chicken rice. I went for the curry in the end because they had a combo plate that offered the most items in a single meal. Jerick got a custom curry combo. Ifore got the Hainanese chicken and Jiselle some satay. Together, we covered a lot of the native dishes on the first meal. We spent the rest of the afternoon browsing the shops and stands and grabbing snacks here and there.

We got back to the hotel around 5:30pm. I always had to make sure I got back towards the end of the work day so I could make calls to Wing and Laura. I was set to meet Wing first, but got a nap in there since it was already a long day. When I got his call, I grabbed my bag and ran to the lobby. I was still sleeping even though I was walking! I even forgot to hand him the gift I got for him in NY. So that means I'll have to meet him again later in the week! From the hotel, we walked over to Raffles City, another mall with food court in the basement. We sat down at a local coffee place. I was wide awake shortly after that! Then we headed over to the Marina Bay where we took a river cruise... a shorter version of NYC's Circle Line tour. It was the perfect thing to do with my short stay here. I also had a good hour to catch up with Wing, who I have not seen since graduation in 1997!
Iluma
I got back to the hotel just before 9pm so I could catch Laura after dance class. I was able to wash up and change before she got to Bugis. We met around 9:30 for bubble tea and snack at Iluma. Like our NY meeting this Summer, this was just a short one, but I was happy to see her and catch up on the past 4 months. Iluma was just about to close for the night, but yet no one rushed us out of the cafe upstairs... very different than NYC!
What an amazingly complete day starting from 3am up to 11pm! I already got to see a lot on the first day. I already met up with both Wing and Laura! I guess that's the advantage of a red-eye flight... no time wasted. I am tired though!

New World Mall
The New World Mall opened a couple of months ago, but this is my first time walking around it because it's been too crowded. I went early in the morning to get these rare people-free shots. There aren't a lot of shops inside the mall, especially for its massive space, but it's setup for profit. The food court in the basement, grocery on the ground floor and banquet style restaurant on the top floor are the foundations to the mall. They take up the most space and provide people with more of the usual in Flushing. Only part of the first floor and second floor have actual shops and they're all what you'd expect in an Asian style mall... gift shops, salons, clothes, movies, etc.
It's located just outside of the subway entrances and takes up a good portion of Main St. and Roosevelt St. in the downtown area, so you can't miss it. It should be a lot more successful than the Caldors it used to be decades ago.

DVDeals 7/25 - 7/31
Clash of the Titans
I haven't purchased on a DVD Tuesday since Terminator Salvation, which was a while ago, but we finally have a good one coming up this week. Clash of the Titans is scheduled to come out. The Blu-ray version is cheapest at Best Buy and Amazon (if you qualify for free shipping) at $24.99. The DVD format is pretty much the same price everywhere... $16.99. This is one of the rare movies that I would buy without having seen it in the theater.
Batman: Under the Red Hood
This looked like an interesting title especially for comic book fans, but I'm going to pass on it because they didn't get Kevin Conroy to voice Batman, which would feel very strange after he voiced the character for every animated release since Batman the Animated Series. Instead, they got Neil Patrick Harris. I love Doogie Howser, but I just don't think he did a good Batman voice (I watched the trailer). If you're interested, Target and Amazon (if you qualify for free shipping) have the Blu-ray for $19.99. The regular DVD is $12.99 at Best Buy and Target. Target has a 2-disc special edition DVD for $15.99. Best Buy throws in a Red Hood statue if you buy the Blu-ray or 2-disc DVD (which they didn't list a price for).

La Isla
One of the things the Palace Resorts people threw in as part of the timeshare sale was a one-day all inclusive pass to the hotel restaurants. Only two of us could use it, so it ended up being me and my Dad because we could eat the most out of the group. Though I wanted my parents to spend time with each other, my Mom didn't want to throw money away. So my Dad and I ate a late breakfast buffet. Then we went out with Emily & Mom to the mall area we discovered yesterday. They settled on Taco Grill for lunch. It was a nice taco stand that had reasonable combo prices... 2-3 tacos and a drink for about 80 pesos.
We did caught in the rain after lunch and took shelter under an archway near Lacoste. We figured we could wait it out because all the rainfall we experienced in the past couple of days only lasted a few minutes. This storm was here to stay though. We finally made a run for a cab. Sure enough, it rained for the rest of the day.

Kukulcan Shopping
After lunch, Emily and I headed out to the flea market and mall we passed by on the way to the wedding. My parents headed in the other direction to a timeshare meeting at Cancun Palace.
During the long walk over, we witnessed a truck drive into the middle island, destroying the weakly cemented curbside. That was the second accident of the day on the same street (earlier in the day, there was a rear-end crash in front of our hotel)... not good statistics at all!
We finally made it to the flea market after making a pit stop at Senor Frog's (a Mexican themes bar/grill chain). We probably spent a total of 5 minutes at the annoying flea market before heading across the street to the mall. The flea market was just full of pushy me chants trying to sell their junk. At the mall, we were able to browse without someone talking to us every second. The mall was similar to a typical American one... even with some of the usual stores... same prices as the US as well. So there was nothing really exciting. We stopped at Coldstone Creamery for ice cream and then took the bus to the Interactive Aquarium.

Queens Health Emporium is actually a supermarket, but they have a built-in food stand and juice bar with limited seating. I went in just to compare prices with what I'm used to in Manhattan and Hoboken now that I'm experienced with organic shopping. For the grocery store itself, the prices are a lot higher for most products. It's surprising that Manhattan beats Queens with prices in the organic category, but I guess there aren't many groceries like this in Flushing. I picked up some apples and Amy's Burritos.
While I was there, I decided to check out the food stand. I've shopped here before, but never ordered food. So I thought I'd give it a shot. They basically have rice dishes where you choose 2-3 veggies along with it and some sandwich choices. I went for something simple... a vegan turkey sandwich. It really didn't look like anything special, but it was full of taste as they stuffed it with lemongrass and carrots. I'm not a big fan of carrots in sandwiches, but the combination they did somehow worked well together.
The service is pretty fast there. You basically place your order. Then you pay at the cashier with the rest of your groceries and then go back to the kitchen where the food is already done. The only negative is they don't seem to have everything on their menu every day. My first choice was actually an "unturkey" burger.
Prices are OK for organic foods. The rice dishes range from $6-7. Sandwiches are $5-6. Juices are about $4.
I didn't give the environment a high rating because it's a weird place to sit down and eat. It's a counter in the middle of a supermarket, so people will be walking around you and there isn't a lot of space.

There's nothing good coming out this Tuesday, but there are a bunch of good titles on sale at Best Buy and Target. As expected, Blu-ray prices dropped quite a bit after Black Friday. The players, which were around $300 last year became as low as $120. And the price drop of PS3 probably helped a lot.

DVDeals 11/29 - 12/5
Terminator Salvation
Finally, another Summer blockbuster will be released this Tuesday. Terminator Salvation is the last one I think. Amazon has the best price for the regular edition DVD at $9.99. They also have the Blu-ray for $15.99. Best Buy has the Blu-ray for $19.99, but it includes a digital copy. It's odd that there are 2 Blu-ray versions... with and without the digital copy. Best Buy also has a special edition Blu-ray for $34.99. They didn't mention anything other than the special endoskeleton box though, so it's probably not worth the price.

Finally, another Summer blockbuster will be released this Tuesday. Terminator Salvation is the last one I think. Amazon has the best price for the regular edition DVD at $9.99. They also have the Blu-ray for $15.99. Best Buy has the Blu-ray for $19.99, but it includes a digital copy. It's odd that there are 2 Blu-ray versions... with and without the digital copy. Best Buy also has a special edition Blu-ray for $34.99. They didn't mention anything other than the special endoskeleton box though, so it's probably not worth the price.

Happy Black Friday
I didn't go crazy for Black Friday this year. There didn't seem to be much on the electronics/movie sections. I found some early deals beforehand online. I woke up at 7am... pretty much normal time and just checked out Radio Shack. They're really the only electronics store that stocks what they advertise. I was able to take care of a few Christmas gifts, so that was successful. My Mom just went to Macy's and got a bunch of clothes on sale. Black Friday for us wasn't that eventful, but efficient.

Woodbury & Fall Foliage
As you know, I'm not much of a shopper, so I can't spend even half a day at Woodbury Commons just going to stores. So I spent most of yesterday's trip shooting pictures of the fall foliage around the outlets. I walked out to the edges of each parking area and was able to get full nature shots.

Ifore's 2nd Vacation
Ifore was here again for another 2 weeks in 2009, making it a total of 2 months in the US out of the year! There weren't as many activities this time around as you can see in the blog because he was here to train and study the restaurant business. He didn't have a lot of free days. Today was his last day and we packed in a lot. We all got up early so we could make it to Woodbury Commons right when it opened. It was a good plan. The outlet opens at 10am daily and always gets packed on the weekends. We arrived at 9:45 and were able to get a good parking spot. It probably filled up around 11am and any time after that, you just have to wait for a car to leave in order to get in... or park very far away. We all split up to hit our own stores. I met up with Ifore at 12pm for lunch. We went to the same place as last time... Desert Moon for Mexican. Then we had about an hour left. I went off to the more distant stores just to see what was in Sony... nothing on sale at all. They just had regular or jacked up prices. It makes me wonder why they're even there! Definitely just a branding presence. 
We headed out at about 2:30pm and got to Flushing at 4pm so Ifore could do some last minute packing and make sure his check-ins weren't overweight. Emily met up with us at 4:30 and we had a nice dinner. There was no rush because his flight was set for 11:15pm. We didn't have to be there until 8pm.It always feels like a long vacation for me whenever I have out-of-town visitors even though I don't take the full time off that they're here. I actually only used 2 vacation days for it, but it felt refreshing.

Ontario Mills
We spent the first half of the day at an indoor outlet called Ontario Mills. It was sort of a half mall, half outlet. Some stores followed the outlet prices with good discounts and the usual buy 1 pair of shoes, get 50% off a 2nd. Others were just regular retail stores.
Emily spent most of the time watching a movie. A full theater was part of the gigantic complex. I walked around once, looked for Blu-rays in a used video store and then hopped on their free wi-fi to work on my Picasa albums for the trip. My Dad & Uncle Mariano were just catching up in the food court while Mom, Auntie Susana and Matt shopped.

3rd St. Promenade
After lunch, we headed to the 3rd Street Promenade since that seemed to be the main tourist attraction in Santa Monica and it had lots of stores for the Philippines family members to shop in. I just went around taking photos and using the city's FREE Wi-fi.

Little Tokyo
The original plan was to go to the beach, but it was too hard to coordinate everyone getting up on time. Also, it got a lot cooler from the previous 2 days. Evelyn planned out a bunch of possible activities and visiting Little Tokyo turned out to be a good alternative. Things started out slow as we were waiting for stores to open up, but at least we got the change of scenery and ate somewhere other than NBC!

DVDeals 9/20 - 9/26
DVD TuesdayThe 2nd season of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles is coming out tomorrow. It's the same price at Best Buy and Amazon... $44.99. The only difference is the Best Buy version has a metal outer case... exclusive. The 2nd season is a lot more expensive, but keep in mind that it has more than twice the number of episodes. It was a true full season whereas the first was sort or a pilot half season. The set is well worth the money too. The 1st season was one of the best Blu-rays I have, so I expect the same out of the 2nd.
